The synthesis of Ba1-x(Ca/Sr)xGdF5: Er3+, Yb3+ and its upconversion properties

Abstract In present work, we succeeded in synthesizing new series of upconversion materials as Ba1-x (Ca/Sr)x GdF5: Er3+, Yb3+ by hydrothermal method. Surprisingly, we found that the doping of both ions can apparently affect the optical performance of these materials. The Ca2+ doping increases the proportion of green light while the Sr2+ doping increases the proportion of red light, which could be used in emission color tuning. Meanwhile, when the ion doping amount reaches 15%, the luminescence intensity of the two materials is 5–6 times higher than that of undoped materials respectively, which reveals that the luminescence efficiencies are great improved. This study testifies that this new series of Ba1-x(Ca/Sr)xGdF5: Er3+, Yb3+ exhibit great potential in the application of new developed upconversion materials.
