Dane Stephen Jonathan Maw, known as Jonathan, was born in Bath on 8 September 1937. His life was one of duty and service, dedicated to healing, but it was also one of relish and pleasure. He savoured the finer things of life in the arts and culture, in good food and wine, and in the company of friends and family.
Jonathan grew up in Bath, where his parents were teachers. He attended Kingswood School and studied Latin, Greek, and ancient history at A level; but rather than pursuing Greats at university, he took up a scholarship in 1956 to study medicine and train as a physician at St Mary’s Hospital, University of London.
