Valorization of Waste: Sustainable Organocatalysts from Renewable Resources

The Cover Feature shows that today modern chemistry helps to achieve the ancient goal of alchemists: transforming waste and worthless materials into precious products such as organocatalysts. By satisfying the principles of a green and more sustainable chemistry, waste biopolymers, such as chitosan, alginic acid, and cellulose, renewable platform molecules from urban waste and saccharide biomass, such as levoglucosenone, isosorbide, mannose, d‐glucosamine, and lecithin, but also terpenes and rosin together with natural proteins have been transformed into hetero‐ and homogeneous catalysts. These sustainable promoters have proven to be efficient catalysts for several synthetic methodologies. More information can be found in the Minireview by S. Meninno.
