David Rosenhan's On Being Sane in Insane Places is arguably one of the most influential psychiatric studies of all time. It asked, “If sanity and insanity exist, how shall we know them?” and claimed to show that psychiatry was incapable of making the call. Partly motivated by her own experiences of psychiatric misdiagnosis while struggling with encephalitis, journalist Susannah Cahalan decided to investigate Rosenhan's landmark study. Her compelling account, The Great Pretender, is an exposé of the study and of Rosenhan himself, showing evidence of deceit and perhaps outright invention in both.
