Volumetric resolution of light field imaging and its effect on the reconstruction of light field PIV

Abstract Light field particle image velocimetry (LF-PIV) based on a single light field camera is a novel technique for the measurement of the volumetric velocity field via a single optical perspective. In LF-PIV, the volumetric resolution of the light field camera and the measurement volume location greatly affect the reconstruction location accuracy of the tracer particles, and hence the measurement accuracy of the volumetric velocity field. This work presents a quantitative characterization of the volumetric resolution of the light field camera by the use of back projection method (BPM) based on geometrical optics. Through the quantitative characterization of the volumetric resolution in the object space, the specific high-resolution zones for the measurement volume at different optical parameters of the light field camera are determined and the light field camera configuration is optimized. With the optimized configuration of the light field camera, the reconstruction of a single particle and multiple particles are performed numerically. The influence of the volumetric resolution of the light field camera on the reconstruction resolution and location accuracy of the tracer particle is further investigated. A proper particle concentration for practical LF-PIV experiments is determined. Results indicate that the volumetric resolution of the light field camera determines the reconstruction resolution of the tracer particle, and the reconstruction location accuracy is relatively high in the high-volumetric resolution zones of the light field camera. The optimization of the measurement volume location is useful for the improvement of the reconstruction location accuracy of the tracer particle.
