Oxidation kinetics of bauxite-based β-SiAlON with different particle sizes

Abstract The oxidation kinetics of β-SiAlON with different particle sizes, synthesized using bauxite, Si and Al powders at 1773 K in flowing N2, were investigated. The kinetic feature of β-SiAlON particles varied little with particle size, and the oxidation curves were parabolic due to a glass film formed on the β-SiAlON particle surface. Small β-SiAlON particles had larger surface areas and lower activation energies than the large particles and were easily oxidized at the initial stage because of the increased probability of contact with O2.
