Salinity is a worldwide problem in agricultural production and is a major abiotic stress for plants in semi‐arid or arid regions; a third of irrigated land and a fifth of cropland are affected by salinity (Muscolo, Sidari, & Panuccio, 2003; Shrivastava & Kumar, 2015). Wild barley (Hordeum brevisubulatum), a perennial forage species, has strong salinity resistance and good productivity. It is the dom‐ inant species in alkalized meadows in northern China and has been widely cultivated in Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Gansu, Qinghai and Xinjiang provinces of China (Jia, 1987).
