Articulating the illness experience is an act of translation. She who experiences illness must communicate something heretofore unknown; must, to paraphrase Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor, interpret her body's “onerous citizenship of the night-side of life”. The Following Scan Will Last Five Minutes, by Dutch poet Lieke Marsman, has been translated into English by Sophie Collins, and so comes to English-speaking readers as an act of multiple translations. Though a short book, it is dense with meaning and form, containing not only poems but also an essay by Marsman, and a series of letters to her, from Collins.
