Articulating the illness experience is an act of translation. She who experiences illness must communicate something heretofore unknown; must, to paraphrase Susan Sontag's Illness as Metaphor, interpret her body's “onerous citizenship of the night-side of life”. The Following Scan Will Last Five Minutes, by Dutch poet Lieke Marsman, has been translated into English by Sophie Collins, and so comes to English-speaking readers as an act of multiple translations. Though a short book, it is dense with meaning and form, containing not only poems but also an essay by Marsman, and a series of letters to her, from Collins. Considered alongside Marsman's main influences, Sontag's essay and The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde, The Following Scan Will Last Five Minutes is an important, provocative volume in the annals of literature and medicine.
