There are very interesting magazines that publish scientific literature, better known as “Popular Science”, intended for a general audience. The articles in these magazines are written by journalists of science who summarize, translate, and even digest, in an accessible language, peer-reviewed papers about recent scientific and technological advances to people who, while not involved directly in formal scientific activities, are interested in science, technology or both. The aim of these popular science publications goes beyond entertainment, but rather is to inform as well as to attract the interest of the readers, who might be even scientists from different disciplines, towards scientific activities, calling their attention to novelties, controversial, and even curious issues. An aspect that must not be overlooked in the writing of popular science is that writers of this genre must have a good understanding of science so that the relevance of the scientific, often original, reports is imprinted in the published material. The scientific sense of the magazine writer must be consistent with established knowledge; otherwise they could produce articles containing exaggeration, oversimplification or misunderstandings, especially on subjects that are targets of myths. It is also important to remember that these magazine writers are also readers of scientific literature in journals, and that papers that show plausible results presented in a very enthusiastic manner, but might not be supported by rigorous methods and analysis could mislead them. Journals, such as JMPEE, have a direct responsibility when taking the contributions of researchers working in science and technology to publish quality and pertinent papers that are a source of reliable scientific content for the writers of popular science.
