Occurrence of Vibrionaceae, Staphylococcaceae, Enterobacteriaceae in green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ) rearing seawater

This study aimed to observe levels of Vibrionaceae, Staphylococcaceae, and Enterobacteriaceae in seawater from juvenile green turtle rearing tanks and in the incoming coastal seawater as the water supply. Bacterial load in water samples were compared from incoming coastal seawater and two different rearing conditions; animal rearing in cement tanks at low stocking density and in fiberglass tanks at high stocking density. Statistically, total bacterial counts in seawater from fiberglass tanks were higher than those of cement tanks. The non-lactose and lactose fermenting enterobacteria, tellurite reducing bacteria, and total plate counts on Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salt Sucrose agar (TCBS) in water from all rearing containers were increased by a logarithmic fold change of 2-3 compared to coastal seawater. Differences in bacterial population structure of the incoming coastal seawater and rearing water were also addressed. Results from biochemical identification of 344 isolates revealed that bacteria commonly found in water samples were Citrobacter spp., Enterobacteria spp., Edwardsiella spp., Staphylococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Photobacterium spp., Vibrio alginolyticus, and Vibrio spp. Conclusively, the microbiological monitoring of rearing water provides important and essential information on health management of aquatic animal husbandry.
