Abstract One of the main causes of hunger in Africa is poverty — especially in rural areas. An analysis of the main profiles and dimensions of rural poverty is necessary to understand the components of this long-term trend. Based on direct observation, this article attempts to draw up a conceptual framework which distinguishes between the intertemporal and cross-sectional dimensions of poverty. The important implications for donors are shown.
