I am delighted to be named the new editor in chief for Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology (FIN). I first want to extend a warm congratulations and thank you to Drs. Jon Levine and Jacques Balthazart for their incredible service to the journal for the last 12 and 10 years respectively. Under their combined stewardship the legacy of FIN has grown to become a leading journal in the field of neuroendocrinology for comprehensive reviews. The 2015 impact factor for FIN is 8.852 and is ranked by Journal Citation Reports in quartile 1 for both Endocrinology and Metabolism (8/131) and Neuroscience (15/256). While many do not put much stock in impact factor this certainly bodes well for the future of FIN. As others have done (Blaustein, 2012), I urge those in the community to put more emphasis on the number of citations per paper/review rather than impact factor of a certain journal. I have been in the field of Neuroendocrinology since I started my graduate career in 1989. I obtained my graduate training with Drs. Doreen Kimura, Martin Kavaliers and Peter Ossenkopp at the University of Western Ontario and continued with my postdoctoral work under the supervision of Dr. Bruce McEwen at the Rockefeller University. It was a formidable upbringing with my ‘‘neurotree” ancestors ranging from Sigmond Freud, Donald Hebb and Wilder Penfield. I am very grateful to my past and present mentors as they have taught me and continue to teach me a lot. My research interests lie broadly in understanding how sex and stress hormones influence brain health and disease in both females and males. With my appointment, we made some modifications to the journal. We re-branded the journal to give it a fresh, contemporary look starting with the cover of the journal has been redesigned from a particular mustard colour to a more serene colour headlined by the abbreviation of FIN instead of the longer Frontiers in Neuroendocrinology. This has several advantages perhaps the primary advantage to distinguish FIN from the Frontiers Media open access journals. While FIN is a subscription journal, as always, it is possible to make your paper open access in a variety of formats via using either an online repository (often available at your own institution) or via the open access pay system within Elsevier depending on the mandate from a particular funding agency. We also updated and expanded the Aims and Scope of the journal to include areas such as neuroimmune interactions, interactions with the gut microbiota and clinical considerations of neuroendocrine mechanisms within disease. One important consideration for any submission to FIN, be it a review or commentary, is that I will be asking authors to explicitly identify whether the cited data was conducted in males or females. Too often in the literature the reader is not informed of the sex of subjects from which specific data and theories may have been
