Superior strength and ductility of 1045 steel with heterogeneous composite structure

Abstract The effects of low temperature annealing on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cold rolled 1045 steel were investigated. It was found that the isothermal annealing at 673 K could transform cementite in the rolled steel from lamella to nano-crystalline state. Against the conventional theory, the low temperature annealing treatment could simultaneously enhance the tensile strength and ductility of the cold rolled steel. The underlying mechanisms of enhancing mechanical properties were analyzed, with a focus on the heterogeneous composite structure of a soft fine-grained matrix embedded with hard nano-scale cementite particles.
