Performance of WOx–VOx based catalysts for ODS of dibenzothiophene compounds

The influence of vanadium oxides on WOx/Al2O3 catalysts for oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of dibenzothiophene compounds, using H2O2 as oxidant agent, has been studied. Catalysts were characterized by TPR-H2, SEM-EDS, XRD, N2-physisorption, XPS and Raman spectroscopy. Vanadium oxide was found to modify the distribution of surface tungsten oxide species (WO6 and WO4) on alumina, furthermore, VOW species were not detected. The amount of WO6 species increased considerably when vanadium oxide was added to catalysts. ODS catalytic tests showed that the bimetallic catalysts are more active than the monometallic. The addition of small V amounts to WO3/Al2O3 improved their ODS activity considerably, which suggests that WO6 species are more active than tetrahedral species.
