Photoredox-catalyzed chloroalkylation and dimerization of styrenes with CF3CCl3 and CCl4

A new protocol for the synthesis of polychlorinated and polyfluorinated diaryl alkanes via photoredox-catalyzed chloroalkylation of styrenes and subsequent tail-to-tail dimerization was developed. This transformation is achieved using available CF3CCl3/CCl4 as chloroalkylative reagents in the presence of fac-[Ir(ppy)3] at room temperature, which exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent tolerance of functional groups.
