Preparation and corrosion performance of healable waterborne polyurethane coatings containing isophoronediisocyanate loaded silica capsules

The preparation and application of silica encapsulated isophoronediisocyanate (IPDI) as the active healing agent in the coatings fabricated by using of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is reported. Prepolymer method was used to synthesize WPU, and IPDI loaded silica capsules (SCs) were prepared via interfacial emulsion polymerization. An almost complete recovery of scratches on the coatings containing synthesized SCs loaded with IPDI has been observed. Incorporating of the IPDI loaded SCs not only grants self-healing properties but also improves the thermal stability of WPU coatings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used for detection of healing procedure and monitoring of thermal degradation as well as SCs loading content.
