The effect of a post-synthesis treatment of 7.5 wt% CuO-CeO2 catalyst with acid solutions on its performance towards the preferential oxidation of CO reaction was investigated. The acidic environment was found to affect the redox and catalytic properties of this solid composition. In particular, modification at low pH (< 4) provided the required amount of acid which led to better dispersion of the active copper species, higher concentration of surface Ce3+ species, an increased concentration of oxygen vacancies and higher reducibility of the solid catalyst. These characteristics were found to be critical for the promotion of the catalytic activity and selectivity in the title process.
