Surface modified LnxLa1-xF3 (Ln = Dy, Yb) nanoparticles: Toward bright NIR luminescence

The NIR emitting nanoparticles obtained by surface modification of Yb3+ or Dy3+ doped LaF3 with aromatic carboxylate anions were studied. The NIR luminescence of dysprosium fluoride nanoparticles surface-modified with an organic ligand was demonstrated for the first time, whilst the brightness of NIR luminescence of surface modified ytterbium fluoride nanoparticles was estimated. The detailed study of the dependence of luminescence intensity as a function of Dy fraction in both bimetallic coordination compounds and bimetallic dysprosium fluorides allowed determining the optimal Dy…Dy distance to obtain the maximum luminescence intensity.
