The effect of incorporating nickel in HZSM-5 zeolite on its performance of desulfurization alongside octane enhancement processes of heavy straight-run naphtha was investigated for the first time. Experimental results indicated that the synergy between Brönsted and Lewis surface acid sites of Ni/HZSM-5 at a low SiO2/Al2O3 ratio and consequently of high acidity made a great impact on the coupling aromatization and desulfurization reactions of heavy naphtha as a proper feed. After using a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 60, the amount (wt%) of total sulfur decreased by 88%. In addition, the research octane number increased from 52 to 94 at the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 40.
