Synthesis of dyes with a sulfur-containing heterocyclic donor and a pyrroline-type acceptor

Donor–π–Acceptor (D–π–A) type molecules including dithiafulvene (DTF) moiety as a donor group and 4-cyano-5-dicyanomethylene-2-oxo-3-pyrroline (CDCOP) moiety as an acceptor group were synthesized in modest yields and showed intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the solution state. The intramolecular S⋯O interactions stabilize the planar conformation of π-electronic systems, and the solid-state assemblies based on π-π stackings were obtained. Furthermore, the N-free derivative bearing the (dimethylamino)phenyl substituent formed solid-state helical structures through hydrogen-bonding and steric effect.
