Rising bedrock may delay ice sheet collapse
Science ( IF 44.7 ) Pub Date : 2018-06-21 , DOI: 10.1126/science.360.6395.1283
Katie Langin

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is vulnerable to catastrophic collapse—a scenario that could raise global sea levels by 3 meters in the coming centuries—because it sits on bedrock that lies far below sea level. A new study published by Science documents a process that could slow the collapse. As ice melts and the crust is lightened, the bedrock beneath West Antarctica is rising rapidly. In places it could rise 8 meters over the coming century, potentially protecting the ice from the warm seawater that is melting it from below.
