The vicinal dioxygenation of aryl alkenes is reported using N‐hydroxylamines and air in the presence of potassium persulfate (K2S2O8). The alkene is first oxidized to β‐aminoxy alkyl hydroperoxide, which is in situ reduced to the diol using molybdenum hexacarbonyl [Mo(CO)6] and base. Metal‐free, aerobic conditions and the substrate scope are the important practical features.
