Luminescence enhancement of (Ca 1−x M x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors through partial M (Mg 2+ /Zn 2+ ) substitution for white-light-emitting diodes

Abstract White-light-emitting (Ca 1−x M x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ (M = Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ ) phosphors were synthesized via combustion. The phase compositions and morphologies of the (Ca 1−x Mg x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ and (Ca 1−x Zn x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors were investigated via X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The luminescence of the (Ca 1−x Mg x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ and (Ca 1−x Zn x )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors was characterized using photoluminescence spectra, which indicate that the best substitution concentration of both Zn 2+ ions and Mg 2+ ions is 4%. Moreover, a comparison of the luminescence intensities of the (Ca .96 Mg .04 )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ and (Ca .96 Zn .04 )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors indicates that the Zn 2+ ions could much more significantly enhance the luminescence intensity of CaTiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors. These results suggest that the (Ca .96 Zn .04 )TiO 3 :Dy 3+ phosphors excited by UV radiation are promising materials for white-light-emitting diodes.
