Abstract In this work a porous collagen/hydroxyapatite matrices were fabricated by the freeze-drying method and then modified using a dehydrothermal treatment. The aim of present study was to investigate the biological properties of prepared scaffolds. Both in vitro as well as in vivo methods were used for these studies. The in vitro study were performed using mouse fibroblasts cells line NIH 3T3 and in vivo by subdermal and peritoneal cavity implantation in rats for up 30 days. The results of in vitro cytotoxity tests indicated that the samples were well tolerated by the cells. Good biocompatibility is demonstrated by the absence of necrosis or abscess formation in the surrounding tissues. This study provides valuable insight, which may lead to new applications of collagen/hydroxyapatite matrices in the field of tissue engineering.
