First page of articleMental health and cancer are closely linked—for example, patients with depression have a higher incidence of specific cancers1 and have a worse prognosis in observational studies than do patients without depression.2 What is not clear is whether this association can be positively influenced, either by the effective treatment of depression or by addressing the causative factors. Previous research3 suggests that depression is also linked with cardiovascular mortality and, in this case, effective treatment of depression appears to ameliorate this excess mortality.
