Global shifts in the timing of life-course events such as cohabitation, marriage, and childbearing, and declines in the desired number of children, mean that most women will spend an increasing period of their reproductive years trying to avoid pregnancy. How successfully they manage to do so is reflected in the rate of unintended pregnancies. Despite dramatic increases in the use of family planning worldwide, previous research shows that in both high-income and low-income settings a substantial proportion of pregnancies and births are unplanned or unwanted.
