Pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics focus on identification of genetic markers associated with response to, or side-effects of, a particular medication. Unlike genetic studies of susceptibility to complex diseases, including psychiatric disorders, in which very small individual effect sizes are assumed, in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics the effect size of genetic markers is assumed to be larger (eg, odds ratios of roughly >5–10), facilitating the detection of significant associations in studies with smaller sample sizes.
