Azurin H117G has an engineered cavity that allows for a series of pyridine containing ligands to form a coordination complex with the protein redox center. The assembly, interfacial electron transfer rate and coverage on carbon electrodes of this azurin mutant in complex with a series of molecular wires have been determined. The determining role of favorable coupling to electrodes in obtaining enhanced electrical conductivity has been measured.
