Doped catalyst supports: Controlled H doping into MoO3 supports via H2 spillover can effectively vary the metal–support interactions with Ir, thereby achieving efficient hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. One of the catalysts examined showed high activity (turnover frequency: 4.62 min−1) and selectivity (>99 %) under mild conditions (T=30 °C, Purn:x-wiley:18614728:media:asia201800159:asia201800159-math-0001 =2 MPa). It is envisioned that further control over the nanostructures of metal oxide supports and relative H doping would boost the metal based heterogeneous catalysts.
