Naturally occurring procapsids of Seneca Valley virus, an emerging livestock pathogen with oncolytic properties, have an external structure that is nearly identical to that of full virion capsids, but they lack a genome. Strauss et al. (e01927-17) found that the procapsids are more sensitive to pH variation than the full virion and retain the capacity to bind receptors. This study elucidates these naturally occurring empty capsids for use as virus-like particles in vaccine development.
