Pakistan's population is growing rapidly. The 2017 census recorded nearly 210 million residents, an increase of almost 60% since 1998 which has seen the country replace Brazil as the world's fifth most populous nation. The number of cars on Pakistan's roads has grown even more rapidly–by 650% between 1991 and 2012. Vehicle sales have skyrocketed, especially since automobile leasing became popular in the early 2000s, notes Ahmad Rafay Alam, an environmental lawyer who lives in Lahore, Pakistan's second largest city.
