To the Editor—We read with interest the article by Kleine et al [1]. The Gastrointestinal Bacteria Reference Unit (GBRU) received presumptive isolates of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovars Typhi (S. Typhi) and Paratyphi (S. Paratyphi A, B, and C) from cases of enteric fever from England and Wales, most of which were from travelers returning from endemic countries. Until now, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)–producing strains of S. Typhi have not been reported in the United Kingdom.
