First page of articleThe need to integrate mental and physical health care is indisputable. Health-care professionals know that people with severe mental illness are dying up to 20 years earlier than the general population partly due to physical ill health,1–3 and they now know that this mortality gap is widening despite current efforts.4 Meanwhile, a high proportion of people with long-term physical conditions continue to be diagnosed with mental illness, around 30%,5 and as many as one in three primary care consultations can concern medically unexplained symptoms.
