In November, 2017, WHO published new guidelines on the use of antibiotics in animals farmed for food. The document urged member states to reduce animal consumption of all classes of antibiotics vital for human health and reiterated WHO's long-standing view that antibiotics should never be used as growth promoters. One key recommendation concerned the use of antibiotics for prophylactic purposes. “Healthy animals should only receive antibiotics to prevent disease if it has been diagnosed in other animals in the same flock, herd, or fish population”, stressed WHO.
