Nongeminate Recombination in Organic Solar Cells

Organic solar cells are still very interesting contenders for the mass production of low‐cost photovoltaics. However, the gap between the power conversion efficiency of ideal solar cells—the thermodynamic Shockley–Queisser limit—and state‐of‐the‐art organic photovoltaic devices is larger than for other current technologies. In this review, an overview of the dominant loss mechanism limiting this solar cell class is presented: nongeminate, nonradiative recombination of charge carriers.
