First page of articleComplications after major surgery are an important cause of mortality and morbidity, especially when they affect the lungs.1 So-called postoperative pulmonary complications occur more frequently than do cardiac complications in patients who have non-cardiac surgery, with reported incidences as high as 40%.2 One in every seven patients who develop postoperative pulmonary complications dies before hospital discharge, and survivors have sustained reduced functional status.1,2 Thus, any intervention that affects the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications could have a substantial impact.
