A supramolecular flask device with inwardly oriented AuI and P=O is described, including a description of its catalytic proclivity in the regioselective hydration of specific alkynes. The bifunctional cavity favors selective folding of a single side chain of unsymmetrical alkynes through host–guest interactions, which skillfully directs the water molecule to one carbon atom of the triple bond.
