Realizing white light emitting in single phased LaOCl based on energy transfer from Tm 3+ to Eu 3+

Abstract Herein, a set of tetragonal Tm3+, Eu3+ doped 3D umbrella-like LaOCl phosphors was synthesized to realize wide range white light emitting. The energy transfer between Tm3+ and Eu3+ ions was observed in LaOCl:Tm3+, Eu3+ system. Multiple evidences clarified conjointly the energy transfer properties involving overlap spectra, changes of emission spectra, and fluorescent decay times. The mechanism of energy transfer from Tm3+ to Eu3+ in the LaOCl host was discussed in detail. The emission spectra of LaOCl:Tm3+, Eu3+ system contain blue light from Tm3+ transition, green and red light from Eu3+ transition, which involves three primary colors constituting white light. Thereby, under excitation at 229 nm, a relatively large range of adjustable white light emission can be reached due to the energy transfer from Tm3+ to Eu3+ in LaOCl host, when percentages of sensitizer and activator are adjusted. The finding clarifies these materials as promising for potential application in near ultraviolet based white light emitting diodes.
