Efficient Synthesis of Succinimide from Succinic Anhydride in Water over Unsupported Nanoporous Nickel Material

The synthesis of succinimide from succinic anhydride (SA) in water over unsupported nanoporous nickel material (NiNPore) is investigated for the first time. As a result, NiNPore exhibited efficient catalytic performance for the conversion of SA into succinimide and gave 93% isolated yield. Recycling study indicated that NiNPore could be reused at least three times and still kept good catalytic activity for the transformation. Moreover, the conversion of glutaric anhydride (GA) could also proceed well into glutarimide at optimal conditions, and provided 71% isolated yield. The result indicated that SA was the main reactant rather than succinic acid in water. This work provides a promising strategy for the conversion of SA into succinimide in water.
