Being overweight or obese is associated with a range of adverse health consequences.1 Bariatric surgery is widely considered to be the most effective treatment for severe obesity and its multiple comorbidities.2 The benefits of bariatric surgery on obesity-associated complications and mortality are well established—however, emerging evidence suggests that bariatric surgery could have unintended adverse effects on some patients' mental health.3
