With this issue, I officially assume the role of editor in chief of JAMA Pediatrics. It is a daunting and humbling task, especially as I take over from one of the true giants in academic pediatrics. Fred Rivara, MD, MPH, has edited the journal for almost 18 years, shepherding it from Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine to JAMA Pediatrics and tirelessly working to increase the quality of the journal. JAMA Pediatrics now has by far the highest impact factor (10.25) of all pediatric journals in the world. Of course, impact factor is but one—albeit important—metric of a journal’s contribution to society. The most important metric—how a journal’s science impacts population health—is considerably more knotty to measure. Frequent citations, which drive impact factor results, mean that other scientists consider the work to be notable, but so much of child health relies on the actions of nonscientists, including clinicians in all specialties, policy makers, day care workers, teachers, and, perhaps most importantly, parents themselves. Publishing research that has clear implications and actionable strategies for these constituents is essential to making meaningful changes that affect child health. The journal has always taken a holistic view of pediatric research, and this will continue. We will seek the best and most impactful studies from all disciplines, especially those that have previously not considered our journal as a place to publish. We are not a medical journal; we are a child health journal. Research from economics, psychology, psychiatry, education, and social work (to name a few) is welcome. We also seek Viewpoints that express thoughtful opinions about anything related to child health and health care. These articles are intended to spur discussion, and we welcome authors to survey the scientific landscape and take bold stances. More than just the name has changed at JAMA Pediatrics over the years. We now offer 2 open access options so that authors, by their own choice or to fulfill contractual expectations of their funders, can make their research freely available. We also offer monthly podcasts in which Dr Rivara and I review and discuss 2 important articles. I am delighted that Dr Rivara will continue to participate in the podcast with me for the foreseeable future. Beginning this year, we will be introducing Clinical Guideline Synopsis and Clinical Evidence Synopsis, which will distill and critique recently published recommendations. I am fortunate to assume this role with an extraordinarily talented group of individuals. Ron Keren, MD, MPH, will join me as deputy editor. Alison Galbraith, MD, MPH; Megan Moreno, MD, MSEd, MPH; and Debra Palazzi, MD, MEd, will be associate editors. Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, will assume a new role as clinical review and education editor. Benjamin French, PhD, will continue as statistical editor, and Aaron Carroll, MD, MS, will become digital editor. Together, we will endeavor to continue to curate the best available research in the world and develop innovative ways to disseminate it. I look forward to the journey together.

Samir S.
