Ion–solvent complexes promote gas evolution from organic electrolytes on an alkali metal anode. In their Communication on page 734 ff., Q. Zhang et al. comprehensively prove this principle and validate its applicability to various electrolyte–-metal systems. A general mechanism for organic electrolyte decomposition and gas evolution was discovered.
