A simple, efficient and catalyst‐free sulfenylation of imidazoheterocycles with sulfonyl hydrazides has been developed in water under additive free condition. This method is highly regioselective, and the corresponding thio products were obtained in good to excellent yields. Experimental studies were indicative of the formation of sufonothioate intermediates from sufonyl hydrazides as the active thiol carrier for this transformation.
