A kinase‐inverting β‐glycoside hydrolase hybrid reaction going one way: The levoglucosan kinase from L. starkeyi converts 1 with inversion of anomeric configuration to yield α‐2. Backwards reaction of 2, or of “activated” analogues 3 and 4, is not detectable, probably reflecting a large energy barrier comprising conformational restrictions of the sugar ring.
