Additive manufacturing (AM) is driving a paradigm shift in the way chromatographic and membrane materials will be made and used in the future for down-stream processing of bioproducts. Progress with prototypes already indicates that these ‘made-on-demand’ precision materials have broad scope and utility, initially targeted to applications with high value products, such as biopharmaceuticals, specialty proteins and stem cells. On further optimisation and scale-up, the advantages provided by novel AM-derived separation media and associated containment modules should rapidly filter down to many areas of analysis and process scale use with lower value commodity bio-based chemicals and biologicals.
