We agree that it could be of interest to investigate the relation between hyperthyroidism and atrial fibrillation in patients with type 1 diabetes. However, we do not have the International Classification of Diseases codes available in the database used for our study. In our Article,¹ we attempted to emphasise that atrial fibrillation is more common in patients with type 1 diabetes than in controls, but that the cause of this association needs to be investigated further. Notably, although the relative excess risk of atrial fibrillation compared with controls was greater for women than for men with diabetes, the absolute risk was somewhat greater for men than for women.
