Lung health: a costly omission

Respiratory illness costs the UK £11 billion each year, of which £10 billion is spent within the National Health Service; these were the staggering figures from a report published earlier this year by The British Lung Foundation (BLF), based on an analysis of data from 2014. These total costs represent 0·6% of the UK gross domestic product and yet in the same year, a paltry amount (<2% of the total health budget) was spent on respiratory related research. On Oct 19, 2017, the BLF and the British Thoracic Society released another report summarising the findings of a systematic review on the economic burden and costs of lung disease.
