Don't hesitate, metalate! Palladium complexes of carbazole-based isophlorins (see figure) were synthesized. Metalation planarized the structures and generated antiaromatic character. The complexes showed weak near-infrared (NIR) absorption in solution. In addition, the sulfur- and selenium-based complexes formed trimeric and dimeric stacked layered structures, respectively, and showed relatively strong NIR absorption in the solid state.
