Film star: Co-based films on various nonconductive substrates are fabricated by physical vapor deposition. Subsequent surface electrochemical modification makes these films highly active and robust for water oxidation, reaching 10 mA cm−2 in current density at a low overpotential of 330 mV in 1.0 m KOH solution. This efficient, safe and convenient way to prepare catalyst films for electrocatalytic studies is valuable and universal, regardless of the substrate.
