Reading the label: The precise labelling of carbon dots with several proteins specifically through lysine residues by using the N-hydroxysuccinimide-ester reaction is presented. The optical properties are improved upon protein conjugation. This strategy can be used with any carbon dots with carboxyl functional groups to label any protein containing lysine residues.
